Samut Sakhon


Known historically as Mahachai, this province has long been shaped by the sea — from salt farming and fishing to mangrove conservation and distinctive ceramic arts. Visit a Benjarong Porcelain Village, where artisans continue the refined Thai ceramic tradition known as ‘five colours’. Participants observe the intricate process of hand-painting porcelain with enamel pigments and gold detailing, often inspired by classic Thai motifs such as lai kranok (flame patterns) and floral designs. Demonstrations typically cover clay moulding, kiln firing, pattern outlining, and delicate brushwork. 


From decorative arts, the programme moves to a Traditional Salt Farm along the Gulf of Thailand coastline. Samut Sakhon is one of Thailand’s important sea-salt producing areas, where salt has been harvested for generations through solar evaporation. Participants walk along geometric salt pans, learning about the seasonal cycle: seawater intake, sedimentation, concentration, and crystallisation under the tropical sun. Farmers explain terms such as flower of salt and sea salt, while demonstrating harvesting tools and storage methods. The visit illustrates how climate, tide patterns, and careful timing determine both yield and quality, offering practical lessons in sustainable resource management.


Environmental learning continues at a Mangrove Research Centre where coastal ecosystems are studied and rehabilitated. Here, specialists introduce the ecological importance of mangrove forests — their role in shoreline protection, carbon sequestration, nursery habitats for marine life, and biodiversity conservation. Interpretive trails and exhibits explain native species, as well as the impact of aquaculture and urban expansion on fragile coastal zones. 


The Mangrove Cruise & Planting activity combines experiential learning with community service. Travelling by long-tail boat through winding green waterways, participants observe traditional fishing methods and local coastal settlements. Guided by community leaders, they take part in mangrove planting, learning proper spacing, seedling selection, and monitoring techniques. This Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) element transforms academic understanding into tangible environmental action, reinforcing themes of stewardship and sustainable coastal management.


The day concludes with a Mangrove Cuisine & Dessert experience, showcasing how local ingredients reflect the province’s maritime identity. Participants sample dishes that feature freshly caught seafood, locally harvested sea salt, and herbs grown in brackish environments. Coconut-based desserts and palm sugar sweets are often included, connecting agricultural and coastal traditions. Community cooks explain how flavours balance salty, sweet, and aromatic elements — a hallmark of Thai cuisine — while sharing stories of seasonal fishing cycles and family recipes passed down through generations.
