The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the United Nations in 2015, provide a global framework for achieving sustainable development by 2030. In Thailand, the SDGs are closely aligned with the country’s long-standing development philosophy known as the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP), introduced by His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great (King Rama IX).
Thailand integrated the SDGs into its national strategies, particularly through its 20-Year National Strategy and successive National Economic and Social Development Plans. The government designated the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) as the main coordinating body for SDG implementation. Initiatives in renewable energy expansion, universal health coverage, and sustainable tourism further illustrate how Thailand operationalizes the SDGs in diverse sectors. The country’s Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) presented at the UN High-Level Political Forum showcase transparent progress tracking and stakeholder engagement, reinforcing Thailand’s position as a model for middle-income countries striving to localize global development goals.
One of Thailand’s unique features for experiential learning in sustainable development is the accessibility of community-based learning sites across the country. Royal Project Foundation centers in northern Thailand, organic farming networks, eco-tourism villages, and urban sustainability initiatives in cities like Bangkok provide hands-on exposure to SDG-related practices.
Visitors and students can observe integrated farming systems, water management models, and community enterprises that embody sustainability principles in daily life. Additionally, Thailand’s strong cultural emphasis on community cohesion (known locally as “khwam samakkhi”) and Buddhist-inspired environmental ethics enrich the learning experience by linking development goals with cultural values. This combination of policy commitment, grassroots participation, and cultural context makes Thailand a distinctive and practical setting for experiential learning on the SDGs.
