Thai Traditional Medicine Research Institute
TTMIC acts as a national bridge between traditional healing wisdom and modern public health by conducting scientific research on Thai herbal medicines, evaluating their clinical effectiveness and safety, preserving endangered manuscripts and pharmacopoeias, and providing laboratories, clinical testing facilities, and archival infrastructure to support evidence-based integration into Thailand’s healthcare system.
Key achievements include leading the research and standardization of Fa Thalai Jone (Andrographis paniculata) during the COVID-19 pandemic. This helped establish it as a widely used treatment for mild symptoms. The office also secured the inclusion of more than 90 herbal medicine formulas in Thailand’s National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM). As a result, these formulas can now be prescribed in state hospitals and are covered under national health insurance.
In addition, it maintains an internationally recognized herbarium containing over 6,000 medicinal plant specimens. It operates a specialized scientific library that supports scholars and practitioners. The institute has digitized more than 10,000 ancient Samut Khoi manuscripts to preserve them from physical decay and make them accessible to modern researchers. It also fosters international research collaborations that strengthen the formal recognition and regulation of Thai traditional medicine nationwide.
Center of Applied Thai Traditional Medicine
Established to promote preventive healthcare and holistic well-being, the center integrates Thai traditional medicine within a modern hospital setting, demonstrating how traditional healing systems can operate alongside conventional biomedical practice under regulated medical standards. Its mission is to advance safe, evidence-informed application of Thai traditional medicine while supporting health promotion and disease prevention.
The center provides a range of applied clinical services, including Thai traditional diagnosis based on elemental theory, individualized herbal medicine prescriptions, therapeutic Thai massage, herbal compress therapy, and lifestyle-based wellness consultations. Beyond patient care, it also functions as a clinical training site for undergraduate and postgraduate students in applied Thai traditional medicine and as a research venue examining the effectiveness of herbal therapies and traditional massage within an academic medical framework. This dual role strengthens the integration of traditional and modern medical knowledge in practice, education, and research.
For field study groups, the center offers valuable insight into integrative healthcare in action. Visitors can observe traditional diagnostic procedures conducted within a hospital environment, learn how herbal medicines are prepared and dispensed according to professional standards, attend academic briefings on integrative medicine models, and—if arranged in advance—experience selected therapeutic treatments. As such, it serves as a living model of how Thai traditional medicine is preserved, adapted, and applied within one of Thailand’s most prestigious medical institutions.
Holistic Health & Wellness Centre
Operating as a proactive "health laboratory," shifts the medical paradigm from merely treating illness to actively optimizing wellbeing. By integrating medical technology clinical expertise, the centre addresses modern stressors and the rise of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) through a unique four-dimensional framework encompassing physical, mental, social, and spiritual health. Using evidence-based tools like blood analysis and biofeedback, they make the invisible markers of internal health "tangible," allowing them to identify "at-risk" individuals before clinical symptoms emerge, ultimately saving both lives and national healthcare resources.
Beyond traditional diagnostics, the center’s primary achievement lies in its ability to quantify the ‘soft science’ of relaxation. They have pioneered the use of clinical Electroencephalography (EEG) to validate mental ‘detox’ therapies in real-time, providing scientific proof for the efficacy of holistic interventions. This impact extends far beyond the university campus; through strategic partnerships with the Department of Older Persons and the deployment of high-tech mobile health units, the centre provides deep-health screenings, behavioral coaching, and nutritional guidance to local communities and senior citizens across central Thailand.
For a field study group, the centre offers a sensory-rich "Science of Wellness" experience that bridges high-tech diagnostics with immersive therapy. Visitors can observe real-time brain mapping during music and art sessions, explore "Smart Labs" that categorize health markers, and engage directly with innovative tools like Tibetan singing bowls and biofeedback sensors. Participants are encouraged to be hands-on: they can undergo their own EEG stress assessments, practice mindful Chinese-style stretching, or join "Koringa" flower arrangement workshops to experience the clinical benefits of "the present moment," all culminating in expert consultations that translate physiological data into personalized lifestyle prescriptions.
